Motorola to close down in Cork… story here
and here
Motorola has played a very important role in forming the software industry in Cork. As a fresh college software graduate in 1989 if you wanted to work in Cork apart from Apple and Motorola the choices were limited.
When a company like Motorola that has such a history in a region decides to pull out, it is bound to leave a large hole. It will leave a large hole for the Cork software industry and also the 350 staff now seeking to continue their careers elsewhere.
I believe better will come of it. The recovery will make the people affected and the local industry stronger.
Multinationals in Ireland have long created world class technical and business leaders of capable Irish workers. We’re well aware of how Galway came to possess a strong software industry with many companies haven grown out of the departure of Digital (DEC).
Motorola’s 350 people are well experienced and when they look around, might well find that the Cork software industry has a place for them.
IT@Cork wants to help and is open to suggestions from members, Motorola employees included.
Good to see this topic started. While it might be positive long term for the Cork IT community it certainly is far from positive for the Motorola employees affected. Most employees would be of the mind that it will be very difficult to get similar jobs and some are making plans to change career altogether and move into the pharma area.
At first glance the web pages appear to be full of jobs, but when you drill down you find that its different agencies pedalling the same jobs dressed up differently.
One useful piece of info would be the contact details of a good recruitment agency, some being better than others. Thanks
Hi,
Has it been announced that Motorola will close ? Those links and my sources don’t say anything is definite right now. Granted it doesn’t look good, but I am wondering if it really means they are closing.
regards,
paul.
Motorola are starting an Outplacement programme in the coming weeks to assist staff in the transition.
We will check into whether we can get a profile list of the expertise available and communicate it to the general IT community to entice interest.
I’m sure at this stage many recruitment companies have already been in contact with Motorola enabling a list to be created for staff there.
According to people in Motorola, a consultation process is taking place over the coming months. I’ve heard initially that they planned to be gone by March but this may take until June or July.
All signs are, that Motorola are seeing it through this time and will not have a presence in Cork by the summer.
Well it now looks like they will close. There is a meeting today to announce it. 330 jobs expected to be lost.
