Great Expectations: java@cork 08 Preview

With less than a week to go for the java@cork 08 conference, I’m putting the final touches to my presentation. It’s daunting to be among such high profile speakers, but I’m looking forward to it and expecting great things from the conference.

If you haven’t registered yet, there’s still time. There’s even a half day option for those that are too busy with project deadlines to commit to a full day at the conference.  It’s the first time that we’ve held the java@cork conference for a full day and I really recommend trying to make it.

This year has a really nice cross section across the Java world. One of things at the top of the list for me, will be seeing the presentations from  Jonas Partner of SpringSource. I’m a huge fan of Spring, and the simplicity it brings to enterprise development. Jonas will be giving a presentation of the Spring plugins for Eclipse and discussing the latest developments in Spring Integration, the message bus for the Spring framework. There’s a good article on it here at TSS.

Ben Hale from SpringSource will also be discussing OSGi and the Enterprise. OSGi is a huge area at the moment. This should be a good commentary on the current state of OSGi, and show how OSGi provides a component model that can help improve how we develop applications.

A lot of the fuss at JavaONE this year was around JavaFX. Simon Ritter will be back again this year to discuss how Java has created a future for itself in Rich Internet Applications with JavaFX. Simon has always been a popular speaker at our conferences – it will be interesting to see if we can get any news on Java7 from him!

Ralph Mueller from the Eclipse Foundation will be presenting about the Eclipse open source model and how it has made it easier for companies to provide quality applications. My own presentation will be along a similar line – a case study on how Pilz Ireland uses Eclipse as a platform. I’ll be talking about how we got to basing applications on Eclipse, giving examples of some of the frameworks that we use, and showing why we believe it is a safe bet for the future.

Other case studies will be presented on SOA (by Oisin Hurley from Iona) and the Lucene Search Engine (by Phil Corcoran from RR Donnelley).

This year we’ll be recording the presentations which should be available as podcasts after the conference.

So, I better get back to finishing my presentation. I hope to see you there.

Pre-conference podcast Anthony Williams

Podcast length – 18:06

Welcome to the it@cork pre-conference podcasts. In this podcast series, kindly sponsored by Microsoft Ireland, we are talking to some of the speakers in the upcoming it@cork Technology in Business Conference 2007.

In this week’s podcast, the fourth in this series, we are talking to Anthony Williams. Anthony is co-author of the bestselling business book Wikinomics and Vice President and Executive Editor of business innovation company New Paradigm. Wikinomics explores how some companies have used mass collaboration (or crowdsourcing) and open-source technologies such as wikis to reduce costs and increase innovation.

Here are the questions I asked Anthony, and the time in the interview at which I asked them:

Anthony, can you tell me a little about the genesis of the book Wikinomics, first of all? – 00:52
In projects where you have mass collaboration, how do you assure quality? – 03:39
Apart from if i want to do some research on Wikipedia, if I am the manager of a small or medium sized business here in Ireland, what effect is this having on me? – 06:37
With the likes of blogs, podcasts and wikis within organisations, are you finding any resistence from embedded management to these systems coming in which are more difficult to control? – 09:59
Do you think companies are wise to block Facebook or should they allow their employees access it? – 12:01
Are there many large companies using Facebook or other social networks internally or externally? – 16:17

Pre-conference podcast – Charles Garvey

Welcome to the it@cork pre-conference podcasts. In this podcast series, kindly sponsored by Microsoft Ireland, we are talking to some of the speakers in the upcoming it@cork Technology in Business Conference 2007.

In this week’s podcast, the third in this series, we are talking to Charles Garvey. Charles is the former CEO of Horizon, one of Ireland’s most successful tech companies, and is now CEO of NitroSell, soon to be one of Ireland’s most successful tech companies!!!

Here are the questions I asked Charles, and the time in the interview I asked them:

Charles, you are CEO of Nitrosell and formerly CEO of Horizon, how did you get into computers day one? – 00:38
Horizon started as a very small company in Blackpool in Cork and you were one of the first companies, weren’t you – 01:28
Can you give us a couple of examples from Horizon and maybe also Nitrosell on ways you have been innovative and the importance of innovation for those companies? – 02:20
Even going back to the days of Horizon, Horizon was quite innovative too and as a result quickly grew from being above that small shop in Blackpool to being one of the largest IT companies in Ireland… – 04:11
Of course Sun wasn’t the only distributorship that Horizon had, Horizon landed distributorships for lots of companies at the time, was it through similar strategies? 05:49
Can you give us a “for example” on some of the strategies used to win the Sun contract? – 06:53
You also mentioned in your abstract that you would be discussing radical pricing strategies, is that more on the NitroSell side than the Horizon side? – 08:37
NitroSell seems to be on a log curve in terms of growth at the moment, what do you attribute that to? – 09:59
The SaaS model is quite innovative too, are you noticing any resistance to you hosting sensitive information? – 11:32
And you have had a lot of success as well partnering with Microsoft and getting them to co-promote with you… – 12:51
You are probably not going to answer this but that seems like a nice neat exit strategy… – 14:35
And finally, do you find membership of organisations like it@cork of benefit to you? – 15:53

Conference speaker Prof Hans Rosling

The line-up of speakers for this year’s it@cork conference is amazing. We have been really lucky. We are publishing podcasts with the many of the speakers in the run up to the conference to give you a flavour of what to expect on the day.

I first came across Prof Hans Rosling when he presented to the Le Web conference in Paris last year. He stole the show despite the speaker list including Nicolas Sarkozy and Shimon Perez!

Unfortunately, due to clashing diaries, I was unable to record a podcast with Prof Rosling but I found this video of him presenting at the TED Conference in Monterey last year. Watch the first three minutes and I think you’ll quickly see why we are so lucky to have him coming to Cork on November 28th.

Prof Rosling is Professor of International Health at Karolinska Institutet and Director of Gapminder Foundation, Stockholm, Sweden. From his wikipedia entry:

He has been health adviser to WHO, UNICEF and several aid agencies. In 1993 he co-founded Médecins sans frontières in Sweden and he is since 2005 member of the International Group of the Swedish Academy of Science. At Karolinska Institutet he was head of the Division of International Health (IHCAR) from 2001 to 2007. As chairman (1998-2004) of Karolinska International Research and Training Committee he started health research collaborations with universities in Asia, Africa, Middle East and Latin America. He started new courses on Global Health, co-authors a textbook on Global Health and promotes a fact based world view.

Pre-conference podcast – Neil Holloway

Welcome to the it@cork pre-conference podcasts. In this podcast series, kindly sponsored by Microsoft Ireland, we are talking to some of the speakers in the upcoming it@cork Technology in Business Conference 2007.

In this week’s podcast, the second in this series, we are talking to Neil Holloway. Neil is the Vice President for Business Strategy at Microsoft International.

Here are the questions I asked Neil, and the time in the interview I asked them:

Neil, you are Vice President for Business Strategy for Microsoft International, can you give us a bit of background on your self, how did it all start? – 00:18
And where does Microsoft International fall into Microsoft’s corporate structure? – 02:09
And what does the strategising role entail? – 02:50
Reading from your abstract, at the conference you are going to be talking about the world of pervasive connectivity. What are the changes that that is creating in the world today? – 03:53
You are on an IP based phone today working out of home, as am I. Are you seeing a shift in the way people’s work and home life are melding together since the rollout of broadband? – 06:37
The emergence of collaborative tools like wikis are radically changing the way people are able to work… – 08:47
Obviously there has to be a lot of trust involved with people working from home… – 10:02
Do you want to talk about the difference between Software as a Service and Software and Services? – 11:33
So you get a richer client experience? – 13:25
Of course one of the advantages of Software as a Service is the lack of an installation… – 13:58
